Bounty: A Digital Still Life

The still life is one of the most familiar themes in art history. From the delicate works of flowers by Henri Fantin-Latour to the bold paintings of apples and pears by Cezanne to Picasso’s Cubist nature mortes, the still life is a running theme through art history. Bounty is a digital still life painted on the computer which carries on this great artistic tradition.

Bounty was composed from imagination. In other words, there was nothing in front of me while I painted, as is often the case when an artist paints a still life. Yes, it would have come out differently if I put a vase with flowers and fruits in front of me to refer to, however that would have been a lot more trouble. I would need to go out and buy flowers, apples, oranges, peaches — you get the point.

Frankly, however, I prefer the freedom that painting from your imagination gives. After all, you spend your whole life looking at countless fruits and flowers so why not draw upon all that experience and come up with your own exactly how you want it?

Bounty is a life affirming picture. Fruits and flowers are gifts and blessings of nature that make our lives better. Fruits nourish the body while flowers are beautiful to behold. Pictures of skulls, or frightening demons are scary. In contrast, Bounty is happiness.
